Back in early 2oo4 I found myself wanting to learn more about natural medicine, in particular in relation to emotional and mental health. Having studied and worked in medical social work practice I felt stifled by the limitations of the bio-medical model and was keen to explore an alternative approach. My plan was to study nutritional medicine as I had always connected with the traditional concept of ‘food as medicine'.
On the college open day, I happened to attend a homeopathy lecture titled ‘Is there an alternative to anti-depressants’ given by my soon-to-be-teacher Mary Bentley. She talked about homeopathy, its scope in holistic mental health care, and presented a couple of cases that showed there was indeed an alternative!
Around the same time I had come across a book by Dr Rudolph Ballentine, ‘Radical Healing’. His chapter on homeopathy & the biochemical cell salts was another entry point and, coupled with Mary’s presentation, I was drawn to dive deep and learn more. Changing my enrolment to major in homeopathy, I graduated 4 years later to my dream job as a homeopath.
